Americans are surviving major illnesses in record numbers; 75% of people who suffer a heart attack or stroke survive at least three years and many heart attack victims regain 100% of their health whereas between 50-70% of stroke victims regain functional independence  Those under 65 are 50% more likely to survive than those 65 and older.  Today many common forms of cancer are very treatable and the survival rates continue to soar.  The bad news is that critical illness can result in financial hardships to the tune of on average $12,000 a year even for those who are fully insured.  Medical expenses are responsible for almost 60% of all bankruptcies in the U.S.  A critical illness policy can make the difference between someone simply existing and someone recovering.
